Ray Robinson (6-8) of Arizona is heading to New Mexico to take on Mescalero native Coty “OX” Wheeler (12-3). The 135 lb match up will take place Saturday September 4th at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino near Albuquerque, NM and will feature Robinson and Ox as the main event. This will be Robinson’s debut at 135 lbs and the first time he is fighting in the Jackson’s MMA Series promotion.
Robinson currently fights out of Southwest Mixed Martial Arts in Mesa, Arizona and trains under Santino DeFranco. He has a heavy background in wrestling, with his wrestling career dating back to his middle school years. After college he moved back to Arizona and jumped right into his MMA career. “Right after I started training I took a fight immediately.” Robinson said in an exclusive interview. “I lost my first fight by a choke and wasn’t happy so I took another fight two weeks later and lost again by the same thing.” He then took a step back and decided to work harder on his training.
As far as his match against Ox goes, it seems that a bit of smack talk has been going around. Robinson tells us, “Ox didn’t want to take the fight originally because the promotion wasn’t offering him enough money. Some of my Facebook fans got on his page and starting bad mouthing him because he wouldn’t sign the bout agreement. I’m glad my fans stuck up for me but at the same time I asked them to stop because I don’t want to disrespect my opponent.” He goes on to say that, “I guess what they were saying got under his skin because he finally signed the agreement.”
Robinson has fought in six different weight classes and is now at 135 lbs to make his debut against Wheeler. “I had to change my diet a little bit but I’m not too worried about cutting. The week of the fight I’ll focus on water weight.” He started at 185 lbs and has worked his way down the weight ladder. He was the 145 lbs Rage in the Cage champion for three years and has fought against UFC and WEC vet George Roop.
When Wheeler and Robinson step into the cage on September 4th, it will more than likely be a battle that will quickly be taken to the ground. Eight of Wheeler’s wins have come via submission and all six of Robinson’s wins were on the ground as well. These two men will try to end the fight as quick as possible. “I want to end the fight as quick as possible without anyone getting to seriously injured.” Ray says. “I have respect for my opponent and don’t want anyone’s career ending because they got hurt.”
Ray Robinson has the virtues of someone far beyond their years and has respect for all fighters win or lose. His eagerness to get in the cage proves that he will be among the elite fighters in MMA. “I have quite a few years left in my MMA career and I plan to make the most of it.”

UFC fighter and Albuquerque hometown hero, Diego “Nightmare” Sanchez, is back after relocating to San Diego.

Sanchez has returned to his roots to train for his October fight against Brazilian Paulo Thiago. The Del Norte High School graduate is living in Edgewood, and is training Jackson’s Gym in Albuquerque, preparing for his big fight. Sanchez feels he can train better in places where he is familiar.

After leaving Sanchez found himself missing home, “when I got out, I really found myself to appreciate this city… the people, you know what I mean, the energy, this is my home, this is my city, this is what I represent,” says Sanchez.

In addition to being a featured guest on the radio show, “Fighter Nation” on 101.7 The Team, Sanchez is also part of the new television show, “Fighter Nation,” which will be filmed in Albuquerque.

Show creators Saul Canizales and Julian Jiron have described the show as the “E News of MMA.” “This is more of a magazine style show that’s more based around upcoming fights that are happening, diets for the fighters, how they go by their nicknames,” says Canizales.

“We actually give the audience what they want to know about the fighter, so we ask them the personal questions, personal lifestyle stuff,” says Jiron.

“This is a lifestyle, MMA show, something that’s never been done,” says co-host Sal Mora.

Canizales and Jiron will be taping several episodes of “Fighter Nation” the television show through January. Canizales says some major sports networks have already shown interest in picking up the show.

Boxer Johnny Tapia will also be featured.
